The right gut feeling important for migratory fish

Why do salmon spend so much time in dangerous waters on their journey to the sea? In his thesis Jeroen Brijs, Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, shows that the answer can be found in the fish’s stomach.

The changes that occur in the gastrointestinal tract when the fish are moving from freshwater to saltwater are absolutely necessary for them to survive the migration.
‘If they fail to compensate for the salty seawater, the fish will soon die of dehydration’, Jeroen says.
